...and how he turned his life around without spending a minute in the gym or a dime on expensive equipment or gym memberships.
Like I said, I had practically given up.
Then one day, I had decided to get on the scale.
What happened next was....well what happened next should have changed the rest of my life.
When I got on the scale, the number on the scale was the highest it's ever been.
I weighed more then I ever weighed in my life.
Not only that, but I went from a 31" waist to a 37" waist.
I was disgusted...
I swore I was going to do something about it...
And you know what I did?
Nothing
Nada
Zilch
I continued doing what I've been doing: working my butt off, focusing on my career, staying busy with my family, eating crap and not exercising.
Why?
Why after gaininig so much weight, after going up 6" in my waist size, after being the fattest I've ever been, why did I do nothing?
I'll tell you why, it's because I didn't have the time and I didn't want to spend hours a week at the gym.
So I did nothing.
I did nothing for a few weeks actually...
And of course nothing changed. In fact I got even a little heavier.
The jeans that changed my life...
It wasn't until I was going through my closet one weekend that everything began to change.
At the very back of my closet, I came across an old pair of jeans. A size 31 pair of jeans.
Ah...size 31..."the good old days" is what I thought to myself (I bet you've probably been there yourself.)
I tried them on and couldn't get the zipper even half way up.
And THAT was it.
That's what did it for me.
I was disgusted.
I couldn't believe how fat and out of shape I had become.
Those jeans is what it took for me to get my butt moving again.
Kinda strange huh? Strange but true.
It took putting on those jeans to say to myself "Enough is enough."

But even with my mind made up, my time limitations were still there (or at least I thought so).
So what was I to do?
How could I lose the fat and get into shape without having to spend hours a week at the gym?
That was the question I set out to answer.
I started researching on the internet
for fat loss workouts that I could squeeze into my crazy schedule. After work, I would hit the library almost every night to see if I can find any new material to learn from.
I talked to all my trainer friends.
I did even more research in the evenings.
I was a man on a mission.
Time to get to work...
As I was doing my research, I stumbled across a ton of information (after all, it's the internet) that literally took me hundreds of hours to go through.
University studies, research papers, "fat burning zones", ab-machines, "Sweating to the...whatever" videos, fat burning pills, I watched a lot of videos and read through a ton of studies.
But my studies and my experiences from training people taught me that most of that stuff was just a bunch of crap.
I needed something based on science and proof, not a bunch of over-hyped products I saw on late night TV.
Finally, I stumbled upon a Japanese study that talked about something called
“tabatas”. This was simply a four minute workout protocol that was
yielding fat loss results similar to those who did much longer workouts.

When I first came across these "tabatas", I was super-skeptical.
I thought to myself:
"This is just more BS, another weight loss scam, no way you can get the same results as working out for an hour."
And up until that point, that's exactly what my training and studies had showed.
I've never read or seen anything like it before, so I just couldn't believe it.
In fact, I almost didn't go beyond that one study because I just couldn't believe it to be true. I asked myself
What if there really was some way to "trick" your body into burning more fat in 4 minutes than you actually would with a traditional 30 minute workout?
Like I said, I was super-skeptical.
But in spite of my doubts, I pressed on and wanted to learn...
What exactly is the "tabata protocol" and why is it so good for losing fat?
I'll try to answer that as succinctly as I can.
Dr. Izumi Tabata, along with a team of scientists in Tokyo, completed a study that challenged the idea that long, steady-state cardio workouts were NOT superior when it comes to achieving fat loss (You know, like running on the treadmill for hours at a time).
This particular protocol used 20 seconds of maximum effort, followed by 10 seconds of rest and repeated this cycle non-stop for 8 rounds (or 4 minutes total).
The results of this study showed that those using the tabata protocol noticed a greater overall increase in VO2max, as well as a significant improvement in anaerobic capacity.
In other words, when compared to steady-state training (also known as long, boring cardio), this method of exercising was far superior because it has the potential to burn much more fat in much less time.
However, working out in this manner is not easy.
Sure, it's only four measley minutes, but it's four minutes at maximum effort and intensity.
Think about when you're working out really hard.
You're huffing and puffing and you're short of breath...so much so that you feel like you're going to drop.
That happens because your muscles are short on oxygen and when that happens, your body is going to increase breathing and heart rate in attempt to take in and transport more oxygen to the muscles.
This “repayment” of oxygen to the muscles, along with other hormonal processes, cellular repair, etc. is referred to as excess post-exercise oxygen consumption (or EPOC). EPOC is joined by an increase in the oxidation of free fatty acids that were released into the bloodstream during intense exercise to be used as fuel.
In plain english...you’re going to experience much better fat loss.
In fact, this EPOC effect has been shown to last for anywhere from a few hours to as many as 72 hours post-workout.

You can see why it’s better to follow a training plan that burns more calories after the workout, then it is to follow a training plan that burns more calories during the workout, but much less after.
So It Began...
I started trying this "tabata protocol" form of fat loss workouts and was performing these four minute workouts once in the morning before work and then again right in my own office at work!
What I eventually learned was that not only were the fat loss claims true, but these were the

The fat literally started melting off, my clothes were getting big on me and to top it all off, I was full of energy!
I couldn't believe it.
The workouts were super short, challenging and just what I needed. And most importantly, they were working!
Suddenly a week went by...
Then a month went by...

My arms were getting bigger and looking more

And that gut I grew over the years working in corporate America was getting lean and firm.
I felt that I might have stumbled upon something here.

was really cool about this whole thing was I did all the workouts in my
living room and in my office and each workout was, yes, I'll say it again...
ONLY FOUR MINUTES LONG!
AND I was able to do them from practically anywhere because I didn't need to use any equipment if I didn't want to.
It was great and I was stoked!
I didn't need a gym.
I didn't need a trainer.
I didn't need hours a day.
I didn't need weights or fancy equipment.
What else could a busy person ask for?
Once I saw that I started getting results, I started tweaking the program based on my experience as a personal trainer and developed a modified system based on the tabata protocol that I still use myself and with my clients to this very day (with lots of tweaks along the way...).
I got so into these 4 minute workouts that I started creating my own variations of these routines.
I experimented with 4 minute routines, 5 minute routines, 12 minute routines, 20 minute routines, full body workouts, body weight only workouts, plyometrics, dumbbell only routines. I tried different intervals with longer periods of activity and shortened rest cycles. I tried combining different exercises to see what worked best.
I literally went nuts with experimenting with this concept and trying to figure out what combinations would provide me with the best fat loss results and get me back to that body I had back in high school, without spending hours a week working out.
After a few weeks of experimenting, I started losing even more fat, started getting more toned and started having a ton more energy.
Most importantly, I was having fun doing it!
I was giddy (I know, I sound like a girl, but I was giddy!)
I felt like I was somehow "cheating" by getting great results with such fast workouts, but not "putting in the time."
